At Coast Counselling Pregnancy and Postpartum Counselling, our counsellors and nurses have all received extensive training at the Reproductive Mental Health Clinic at St. Paul's Hospital, located in Vancouver, British Columbia, and are registered with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, The Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, or the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses. The clinic offers individual, couples and group therapy. We tailor treatment plans to individual needs. Our focus is encouraging parental adjustment to life transitions through self-care, support, parenting skills, sleep consultation, and teaching emotion regulation.
Individual Counselling
Our therapists are committed to providing services to all members of the community. We also realize that perinatal depression can affect the partners of those who are suffering from it. We welcome the opportunity to both counsel and educate those who are supporting women with postpartum depression. We also support men or partners who experience postpartum depression.
Our counsellors are also available for counselling sessions via Zoom or telephone for those who are unable to attend counselling in person. This may be a useful option for clients with young babies or children who have trouble leaving their house for appointments.

Couples Counselling
Couples may seek counselling to improve a troubled relationship, or to recognize and resolve unhealthy relational patterns and conflicts. Counselling may be short or long term, depending on the couple’s situation, and typically includes both partners, although sometimes one partner chooses to work with a therapist alone.
Relationship counselling can address many issues including; communication and anger issues, conflicts about parenting or adjusting to blended families, sexual difficulties, infidelity, financial problems, power imbalances in the relationship, or pre-marital exploration of relationship expectations. There are instances when couples realize that, despite their best efforts, their differences truly are irreconcilable and that it's best to end the relationship. In these situations, couples may seek counselling because they have decided to separate or divorce, and strive to make this transition easier for their family.
We work with each couple to identify their goals for therapy, and teach skills to improve communication, and understand and reduce conflict. In our work with couples, we draw upon theories and techniques from Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive Therapy, the work of Satir and Gottman, and attachment theory. We provide a safe space for couples to communicate openly, solve problems together and discuss differences rationally. Although making the decision to seek couples counselling can be difficult, seeking help is more effective than ignoring your problems, or hoping your relationship improves on its own.
